Social media and public relations manager

10/5/20261 min read

A public relations and social media manager in the construction business helps explain complex projects to the people affected by them. Construction work is visible, time-sensitive, and often disruptive. Road closures, noise, dust, changing schedules, and new developments can raise questions among residents, clients, employees, regulators, and local businesses. The communications manager provides clear, accurate information and builds confidence in the company’s work.

The role combines strategic communication, media relations, community engagement, and digital content management. It requires a sound understanding of construction operations as well as strong writing and relationship-building skills. By translating technical details into accessible language, this professional helps audiences understand what is happening, why it matters, and what to expect next.

Key Responsibilities

  • Content Creation: Capture site progress through time-lapse videos, behind-the-scenes photography, drone footage, and project case studies.

  • Channel Operations: Plan, schedule, and publish posts across platforms like LinkedIn (for B2B, tenders, and employer branding) and Instagram, Facebook, or Google (for local community and recruitment updates) via tools like Hootsuite or Buffer.

  • Community Management: Respond to comments, direct messages, and local feedback loops on active build sites.

  • Performance Analytics: Track engagement rates, reach, website traffic driven from social, and audience growth.

  • Award Submissions: Coordinate industry and regional construction award entries by gathering project data, photography, and impact metrics.

  • Crisis Communications: Prepare holding statements and train designated project spokespeople to respond consistently to site accidents, traffic disruptions, or community pushback.

  • Internal Newsletters: Keep a mobile or site-based workforce informed via company newsletters, intranet updates, or digital boards.

  • Recruitment & Apprenticeships: Support HR by showcasing company culture, health and wellbeing initiatives, and local trade careers to attract future talent.

  • Events & Exhibitions: Assist with the planning and on-site delivery of public consultations, trade shows, site visits, and stakeholder open days
